Garrard 401 – the follower of the iconic 301.
Only platter (tonearm was separate) with a monster of a motor, full of torque, extremely low hum, silent and hugely reliable.
This particular one used to belong to Phil McDonald, ex-sound engineer of the Beatles at Abbey Road Studios and is said to have been used by George Harrison on a regular basis as a friend of the family; this was on the spare bedroom were George Harrison used to crash overnight.
The lid still has stickers like ‘Black Horse Records’ and an ‘Abbey Road’ 7″ label.
Thanks Rob for the opportunity to add this precious unit to my collection.
Note an SME 3009 II tonearm. The Sure cart is the one it came with too…
